The live band vs DJ question comes up with almost every event we help plan: Live band or DJ? Both are brilliant — the right choice just comes down to your event, your space, your budget and the vibe you're after. Here's a straightforward breakdown to help you decide (and a third option most people don't realise they can have).

When a live band is the right call

A live band brings energy and spectacle you can't fake. There's something about real musicians in the room that lifts a crowd and creates a genuine "you had to be there" moment — perfect for gala dinners, wedding receptions and any event where you want a wow factor.

Worth keeping in mind: bands need a bit more space and a slightly bigger budget, and the song list is the band's repertoire (a great cover band's range is huge, but it's not infinite).

When a DJ is the right call

A DJ gives you almost unlimited range — every genre, every era, seamlessly mixed to keep the dance floor moving. DJs are versatile, space-efficient and generally the more budget-friendly option, which makes them ideal for parties, cocktail functions and late-night sets.

If you want live-music energy and a DJ's flexibility, that leads nicely to the best-kept secret…

Live Band vs DJ: Why Not Both?

You don't have to choose. Many of the corporate events we look after run a live band for the peak of the night and a DJ to open and close — or a DJ paired with live saxophone or percussion for a live-music feel with a DJ's song range. It's the combination that keeps a dance floor full from the first song to the last.

A quick guide by event type

  • Gala dinner: band for the headline moment, DJ to keep it going late.

  • Conference: acoustic or DJ for welcome drinks, band or DJ for the gala night.

  • Wedding reception: band for the party, DJ (or DJ/sax) for flexibility and late night.

  • Cocktail function: DJ or a relaxed acoustic act.

  • Corporate party: DJ for range and value, or a party band for maximum energy.

What about cost?

As a rule of thumb, a full live band costs more than a DJ — you're paying for more performers and more gear. But ranges vary a lot depending on the act, the hours and your event, so the honest answer is: tell us the details and we'll give you options at different price points.
